Traditional Bhutanese Attire

Bhutanese citizens are required by law to wear the national dress—codified by Driglam Namzha—at schools, government jobs, and festivals.

The Gho (For Men)

• A knee-length robe tied at the waist with a woven belt (kera).
• Features a large folded front pocket and folded white cuffs.

The Kira (For Women)

• An elegant, ankle-length wrap dress.
• Secured at the shoulders with silver brooches (koma).
• Worn with a short silk jacket (toego) over it.

Ceremonial Scarves

Locals must wear a sash when visiting official venues:

• Men wear a kabney (white for citizens, orange/blue/green for officials).
• Women drape an embroidered rachu over their left shoulder.

Can Tourists Wear It?

Yes, renting and wearing traditional attire is highly welcomed by locals, especially for attending festivals (Tshechus). However, it must be worn correctly out of cultural respect.
